Ecotourism Guidelines
Our guidelines for visiting communities in Malawi
Our Malawi team have put together a little bit of information about what to expect when going on an ecotourism visit. We hope this answers any questions you might have, if not please feel free to have a chat with your guide or village host.
· What to wear? Traditionally Malawians are conservative dressers and we encourage you to respect this. Long trousers or a skirt with a t-shirt or cotton shirt is advised. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes as you might be doing a fair amount of walking. Also don’t forget a sun hat and sunblock.
· Always ask first before taking photos or video of people in the host community, especially if what you are photographing may be something private or sensitive. If you promise to send back photos, make sure and try to do this. Orbis/RSC. is more than happy to act as a middle man for your pics so just send them to us by email and we will pass them on!
· When visiting sensitive areas such as private homes and community spaces, you will be sometimes met with singing and dancing- this is a traditional Malawian welcome for all visitors, it is by no means staged! Just sit back, enjoy and join in!
· If you would like to make a donation towards the project or community please speak to your RSC representative about this. We do not encourage handing out money direct to the community as this creates a culture of dependence. We are more than happy to facilitate any further support you wish to give the project and can suggest some sustainable ways of support and ensure transparency and accountability along the way. RSC do not take any commission for this service. Please remember you are already contributing as every visit to a community setting is charged $20 per person which goes direct to the community organisation.
· On many eco tourism visits you will be given the chance to eat local Malawian food. If you have any questions about what you are eating please feel free to ask your guide. Please let them know if you have any allergies or if there is anything specific you do not eat. Please note that traditionally Malawians eat with their hands, it is probably best to watch how they do this and follow suit!
· Enjoy your community visit and please feel free to direct any questions to the project representative that will be accompanying you on your trip or your RSC guide.
